Nigerians are no strangers to constant fuel price increases. It's something that happens fairly regularly.
However, the recent removal of the subsidy on fuel escalated things to another level.
How were Nigerians coping?
Trust Nigerians to come up with the most witty of memes and GIFs and skits to demonstrate.
But in reality, as the fuel (and other) prices continue to rise, people have to keep looking for ways and means to either manage the situation or look for additional sources of income - no small feat in this current economic climate
So, in keeping with true Sapanomics tradition, I'd like to share my two kobo on the matter
1. Fuelling the car: Let's start with commercial vehicle transporters. They have taken to buying fuel in small amounts much to the annoyance of passengers who have to wait in the bus while they buy fuel. This is coupled with already rising transport costs.
For private car owners, I notice that some:
- Carry passengers on their way to and from work to offset fuel costs
- Do car hire business on weekends and holidays by taking people to their destination and being paid for the day/s
- Others sign up with companies like Uber, Bolt etc to make some money on the side
